What to Do After Water Damage

Put safety before property

Do not enter standing water around electrical equipment, unstable ceilings, structural damage, or suspected sewage contamination. Use emergency services for immediate life-safety threats.

Stop the source when it is safe

For a broken supply line or fixture, shutting off the appropriate valve or main water supply may limit further damage. Roof, sewer, or stormwater problems may require a different professional to stop the source.

Document and protect what you can

Photograph visible damage before major changes when practical. Move unaffected items away from the wet area if it can be done safely. Do not delay urgent mitigation solely to collect photographs.

Move from removal to drying

Standing water may require water extraction. After visible water is gone, wet assemblies may still need drying and moisture checks.
